1. What is the SAT?
The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test), administered by the College Board, is a standardized exam assessing students' readiness for college in Reading, Writing, and Math. The test is split into two main sections:
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW)
Reading Test: Tests comprehension, vocabulary in context, and analytical skills through diverse passages.
Writing and Language Test: Assesses grammar, sentence structure, and communication effectiveness.
Math
Covers Algebra, Problem Solving & Data Analysis, Geometry, and Trigonometry. It includes both a calculator-allowed and no-calculator section.
Scored out of 1600 (200–800 per section), the SAT is a widely used measure in college admissions.
2. Why is the SAT Important?
The SAT is crucial for students aiming to attend U.S. universities, especially selective ones. Admissions committees use SAT scores along with GPA, extracurriculars, and essays to assess academic readiness. High SAT scores can impact:
Scholarships: Many organizations award scholarships based on high SAT scores.
Application Boost: A high SAT score will significantly boost an application and may compensate for a lower GPA.
College Placement: Some colleges use SAT scores for course placement or to waive prerequisites.
For context, here are average SAT scores for top universities:
Harvard University: 1520–1600
Columbia University: 1510–1560
University of Chicago: 1510–1580
NYU: 1370–1530
UCLA: 1430–1520
Scores above 1500 are highly competitive for Ivy Leagues, while scores above 1400 are generally strong overall.
